How to Import Japanese Used Cars to Tanzania?

Japanese used cars are a top choice when it comes to durability and reliability of the vehicles. These cars are exported in many countries of the world.

Many African countries also prefer Japanese used cars. It can be seen on the roads of many countries like Tanzania. Tanzania is an east African country which is a major importer of Japanese used vehicles.  

Importing Japanese cars in Tanzania is easier. It is possible by following a simple procedure.

Import Japanese Used Cars in Tanzania

1.       Choose a Reliable Exporter:

The first step is to find a used car exporter that exports cars in Tanzania. You can find many used cars exporters online that offer export services. The Internet is a good source to find information about these exporters. You can visit their website and get proper information about the services they provide.

It is better to check their website for details. Check everything regarding their experience. It is better to get as close as you can by using the phone or fax.

The best way is to get in touch with their past customers to know about their services.

2.       Choose the Right Car:

Have you chosen the car that you would like to buy? You should visit the stock of Japanese used cars and select the one that suits your budget. You can also see pictures of cars that you want to buy.

3.       Order and Payment:

After you have made the vehicle selection, you need to order the car. The exporter will send you an invoice. You can pay it into your local bank account to get transferred to their bank account.

Keep the receipt of your bank payment with you to show it to your supplier. They will confirm it and start the process after that.

4.       Shipment Delivery:

Once your supplier acknowledges that payment, shipment process can be started. It depends mostly on the conditions of payment between you and your supplier. 

You should ask your supplier about the possible arrival date. You should also ask him to send you all the documents by air courier so you can start preparing for port clearing.

5.       Port Clearance and Custom Clearance

You have to arrange a local port clearing agent. You can contact them to make arrangement for port clearing.  Provide everything relevant to your clearing agent to start the process.

Import Rules and Regulations:

Shipping Ports:

  • Japanese used cars are imported to Dar-Es-Salaam Port of Tanzania.

Age Restrictions:

Unlike many other countries, Tanzania has not any age restrictions for used Japanese cars. But, excise duty is imposed additionally on the cars that are older than 8 years.

These are charged additionally as given under following:

  • Non-utility vehicles are charged at the rate of 25%
  • Utility vehicles charged at the rate of 25%

Inspection

All new or used cars must go for a road-worthiness inspection. This roadworthiness inspection is performed by JAAI. It is a non-profit organization under the supervision of Japanese Government.  If a vehicle comes into Tanzania without this certificate, heavy penalties are applied.

Before importing the vehicle, make it sure that it has passed JAAI.  Along with shipping documents, JAAI will be sent.

 

Import Taxation in Tanzania:

Like many other countries, you have to pay import tax for used Japanese cars. Import tax depends on the engine capacity.

Vehicles with the engine capacity up to 2000cc:

  • Import duty 25%
  • VAT 20%

Cumulatively, this is 50% of dutiable value.

Vehicles with the engine capacity above 2000cc:

  • Import duty 25%
  • Excise duty 10%
  • VAT 20%

Cumulatively, this is 65% of dutiable value.

Excise Duty:

Excise duty is applied on the basis of engine capacity. It is a duty that is applied to good and services manufactured locally or imported at varying rates.

It is charged on the basis of cylinder capacity.

Description of vehicle Applicable Rate:-

  • Of cylinder capacity not exceeding 1000cc- 0%
  • Of cylinder capacity exceeding 1000cc but not exceeding 2000cc- 5%
  • Of cylinder capacity exceeding 2000cc- 10%

Import of Japanese used cars in Tanzania is easier. Like many other countries, it is better to have information about the import rules and regulations. Some duties and taxes are also applied when importing Japanese used cars.
