Nissan Renault Alliance falls behind Volkswagen and Toyota in First Half Vehicle Sales
The alliance of eastern and western automakers ,Nissan-Renault-Mitsubishi, lost its lead in the first half of 2019, coming behind Volkswagen AG and Toyota Motor Corp.
The three-dimensional alliance had the most vehicle sales globally in the first half of 2017 and 2018 but fails to meet two of its competitors this year, selling a collective 5.21 million vehicles in the January-June period, 5.9 percent less than a year earlier.
The numbers come as Japan’s Nissan announced it is cutting 12,500 jobs , putting an end to former chairman Carlos Ghosn’s expansionary plans.
Germany’s Volkswagen along with its Audi and Porsche sold a combined 5.37 million vehicles in the January-June period. Toyota and its subsidiaries Hino Motors Ltd. and Daihatsu Motor Co. sold a joint 5.31 million vehicles.
