The end of the car wash? Nissan develops 'self-cleaning' vehicle

The paint is both oleophobic and hydrophobic, which means it repels both oil and water. This new type of paint on cars — the concept as a whole isn’t new — will cause all dirt, grime and water to simply roll off the vehicle rather than sticking.

First, we saw a car that drives itself. Now, there is a car that cleans itself.

Thanks to Nissan, the end of the soap and bucket treatment may be near as the Japanese car company has revealed a new paint coating that repels dirt and grime. The paint, which has been named “ultra-ever dry” is expected to be available first as a paid upgrade of the new Nissan Note.

The reason the materials wont stick is that the paint has a rough texture at a microscopic level which forces air to remove any dirt from the vehicle. This new paint is expected to make it to more Nissan vehicles, and likely other manufacturers, within the next couple of years.
