NIO Electric Vehicle Manufacturer Equip its Upcoming ET7 Sedan with Silicon Carbide Drive Unit
Electric vehicle start-up NIO Inc., plans to use its new silicon carbide (SiC) electric drive system in future electric vehicles, starting with the new ET7. The silicon carbide inverter offers higher efficiency benefits than conventional inverters that use silicon semiconductors because they generate less heat and are less temperature sensitive. The SiC EV powertrain also has lower cooling requirements and a smaller form factor, making it ideal for electric vehicles that pay attention to size and weight. Silicon carbide also provides higher thermal conductivity which is important for high speed high voltage electric motors to avoid overheating.
