Don’t ignore these Common Signs of Suspension Problems

The suspension system of your car performs a variety of functions like maximizing the friction between the tires and road surface, providing steering ability with handling and ensuring the comfort of the passengers. Without it, your car would likely fall to pieces.

The suspension system of the car is made up of number components which are damper/shock absorber/struts, coil spring, upper and lower control arms, and control arm bushings. These parts work together to increase the number of contact tires have with the road surface and smoothen the car handling characteristics.

With constant use, suspension systems wear out and lose their effectiveness with the passage of time. It is recommended to monitor the performance of the suspension of your car. Here is a simple guide to identify common signs of suspension problems.

  • Pulling to One Side While Driving

It is the most common sign of suspension problems you can see. Without the help of a professional, it can also be one of the hardest problems to diagnose. Proper alignment of the tires is necessary for the smooth movement on the road. Poor alignment means uneven tire wear, undesirable pulling, a constant struggle with the steering wheel, and reduced gas mileage. The pulling could be due to many reasons such as uneven tire pressure, uneven tire wear, and poor alignment and so on.

If you climb over any curb or blow through a pothole, your alignment can get out of whack.  Sudden changes in alignment do not happen magically. It is usually a broken spring or control arm.

The fix for this problem may include rotating the tire or inflating the tires. It can also be complete replacement of main suspension components. Do not ignore this problem as it can turn into a major issue.

  • Feeling Every Bump in the Road

You can assume that your shocks or struts could be worn or are in need of replacement if you are having a rough ride. When the car bounces on every bump on the road, it requires your attention. You can try bounce test to determine if shocks or struts are worn and in need of replacement.

Blame shock absorbers when your car is bumpier than ever. They are designed to keep your car on the road. When they fail to function the car will bounce all over the place.

  • One Corner of the Car is Sitting Low

Park your car on the ground level. If you notice that one corner sits lower than the other probably you got a damaged spring. The cornering is affected and you can notice a clinking noise when going over bumps.

The problem is mainly due to the relationship between the shock and the spring.

To diagnose spring problems, push down the trunk of the car, release, and listen to how the suspension reacts. You got a suspension problem with the parts if you hear a creaking or squealing sound. Get your car inspected as soon as possible.

  • Momentum Makes Your Car Lean Forward, Back, or Roll

It is time to replace shocks or struts when you notice the following related issues:

  • Your car nose leans forward when braking

  • Your vehicle leans side-to-side when cornering
  • Your car leans backward during acceleration

Even though, you can experience these things with extreme handling with a brand new suspension system. We are talking about day to day driving situations. You should not experience these things routinely.

  • Difficult Steering

If you find yourself struggling steering your car, especially when you are moving slowly, something might be wrong with your suspension. Any components in your power steering system could be responsible for these issues. You can begin with power steering fluid.
